Pulp is a hydrophilic material and paper is made by a linkage of them. And, paper is a porous material due to its own unique network structures, so very weak against water. So, to improve a water penetration into paper, some cationic wax like AKD is put into pulp slurry, and then its hydrophobic branches delay it. This is the basic theory of AKD sizing for paper. Especially, AKD sizing system can be used in a neutral sizing system of paper mfg.
