Introduction
Corrosion protective characters of zinc flake
Zinc metal providing cathodic protection against corrosion. Especially, zinc flakes also have the advantage of excellent barrier protection. The barrier effect provides long-term protection while cathodic protection against corrosion is only temporarily.
Cathodic protection against corrosion requires a conductive contact both between the zinc particles themselves. Zinc flakes have a more extensive contact which allows better electrical conductivity and consequently better anti-corrosive properties.
Advantage of zinc flake coating
Because of their lamellar shape, zinc flakes have a fundamentally higher specific surface area than spherical zinc dust. The correspondingly higher binder content is decided by formulations with lower pigment volume concentration. As a result this provides advantages for both handling of pigments and paint properties.
Less zinc content in paint
No blistering
Smooth surface
Lower weight
Greater flexibility
Good overcoatability etc.
