Patrinia Extract Description: Patrina Villosa Juss (PVJ) is the rhizome and root-bearing herb of Valerianaceae. It is a commonly used herbal medicine. The 1977 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia contains Patrina Villosa Juss as a quality product. It is only used in parts of Northeast, Inner Mongolia, Shandong and Yunnan. The 2010 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia stipulates that Patrinia scabriosaefolia Fisch is the certified products. Patrinia has the functions of clearing away heat and promoting diuresis, detoxification and purulence, activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis, clearing away the heart fire and tranquilizing mind. It can be compatible with Sargent gloryvine, Coix seed, Peach kernel, Cortex Moutan, Rheum officinale, etc. And can also be compatible with Houttuynia cordata, Platycodon grandiflorum, Coix seed, Wax gourd seed, Reed rhizome,etc. It can also be used with Honeysuckle and Forsythia suspensa, etc. Compatible with Safflower and Hawthorn.
 
The study of Patrinia began in the 1940s. M. N. Varlakov first reported that the Patrinia extract from East Baikal had a physiological effect similar to Valeriana. In 1973, Japanese scholar Taguchi Ping Ba Lang and others first obtained three iridoid glycosides from the roots and rhizomes of Patrinia, namely villoside, loganin and morroniside. Chinese scholar Xu Chengjun and other scholars have also obtained two new iridoid glycosides, named villosol and villosolside, as well as oleanolic acid and palmitic acid.
