Coffee Break

Introduction

‘Coffee Break’ is for playing a game themed with a coffee shop or a coffee house.

The game can be played where each player (participants) in the game plays the role of ‘barista’ and tries to handle the orders of customers faster than other players.

In this game, about 2~3 baristas will have to take a look at 4 cards shown on the table and need to complete the orders “as their wit says” by using each of the 7 cards in their hands .

The game can be also called ‘A party game’ or ‘A wit game’.

The game rule is very simple. Its illustration is cute and the game box (The coffee cup) savors strongly of coffee as the theme. Young and old and male and female, families, friends and lovers can enjoy playing the game in a short period of time (10 ~ 15 minutes).

1. Composition of the cards and preparation for the game

(1) Composition of the cards

? Individual cards can be easily identified by the back side of each card.

20 order cards: They indicate the name of coffee and the ingredients for completing the orders

They are differentiated by the line along the edge and by their color

58 ingredient cards: The cards indicate the ingredients of coffee.

3 joker cards: They can be turned into cards for ingredients desired by the player.

3 help cards: They indicate the information about the order cards and the ingredient cards.

It is possible to look at the help cards in the middle of the game being played in order to check the points.

(2) Preparation

? Take one help card individually.

Sort out the remaining order cards and ingredient cards and shuffle and arrange them in a way that the back side of each card can be seen.

? Decide the first player and take 4 cards from the top of the pile of the order cards one by one and arrange them in a line on the table in a way that the front side of each order card can be seen.

? Each player now can take 7 cards one by one from the top of the pile of ingredient cards without letting others see them. The ingredient cards of the players are to be used to complete the orders. When individual players take the necessary 7 cards, the game can start when the first player lays down the ingredient cards below the desired order cards or exchange cards (Refer to How to play the game)

2. How to play the game

“When the ordered coffee is completed by laying down an ingredient card that is suitable for the order card, the player who lays down the last ingredient card takes the order and gains a point“

The participants play the game one by one starting from the right direction of first player. Individual players are allowed to choose only one of following actions when it is time for each of them to play.

(1) After laying down a suitable ingredient card for the disclosed card, it is required to add the ingredient card which the player lacks.

Players lay down ingredients cards for the disclosed order cards. Each player can lay down ingredient cards separately for multiple order cards, or multiple ingredient cards for one order card. As long as it is suitable for the conditions of the order card (Small ingredient picture), each player can lay down 1 ~ 7 ingredient cards.

Players need to bring new ingredient cards from the pile of the ingredient cards as many as they can lay down. In doing so, individual players are expected to have 7 ingredient cards when each turn is completed.

* Each player should not bring a new ingredient card while laying down the existing one. They bring a new ingredient card from the pile of the ingredient cards only after individual players lay down the ingredient cards as many as they desire.

*‘The ‘joker cards’ can be used as ingredient cards as the players want. A player allows other players know which ingredient the joker card is to be used for.

(2) Exchange the cards in hands.

Players can exchange cards. It is possible to exchange 1 ~ 4 cards and the discarded cards are to be put at the place for the disclosed and “used” cards. It is required to bring new ingredients card from the pile of ingredient cards as many as the players discarded. If a player chooses the exchange, the player should not lay down the ingredient cards below the order cards.

* The cards to be discarded due to the exchange should be discarded while being disclosed. Once after the order is completed, all the cards laid down below the relevant order cards need to be discarded while being disclosed.

The area where all the discarded ingredient cards are placed is called ‘the area for the used cards’. If a new ingredient card can not be brought any more as the pile of ingredient cards is used up, it is required to reshuffle the cards of the ‘area for the used cards’ in order to make and use a new pile of ingredient cards.

If a player could not bring as many ingredient cards as desired, the player can take the rest of the targeted cards later from the reshuffled pile of ingredient cards.

?When a player chooses and finishes an action, it is the time for the next player to participate.

?A player does not have to complete the ordered coffee at his/her turn necessarily.

(3) Acquire the order cards

when an order is completed, the player who lays down the last ingredient will acquire it. It is required to bring a new order card into the place of the one taken by the player. The number of disclosed order cards should not exceed 4.

The order cards to be newly disclosed need to be disclosed after the player completes his turn.

Even after an order is completed, if a player holds ingredient cards that can be laid down below other order cards, the player can keep laying down the cards as long as the order cards allow.

In the middle of laying down the ingredient cards in such way, it is required for a player not to disclose a new order card at the place of the order card (Vacant) completed in his/her turn.

3. End of the game

Players gain points by completing the order card.

When the points exceed the level for ending the game, such as ‘20’ points – 2 persons and ’15 points’ – 3 persons, the game ends and the relevant player wins the game.

4. Points of the order cards

(1) 2 points for each Espresso (Including Espresso con pana) order card: Light green, bold dotted line

- You can get 2 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 3 same orders.

(2) 2 points for each Americano (Including Ice Americano) order card: Sky blue, cross-shaped dotted line

- You can get 2 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 3 same orders.

(3) 3 points for each Café Latte (Including Ice Café Latte) order card: Brown, round dotted line

- You can get 3 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 2 same orders.

(4) 3 points for each Café Mocha (Including Ice Café Mocha) order card: Purple, solid line

- You can get 3 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 2 same orders.

(5) 4 points for each Cappuccino (Including Ice Cappuccino) order card: Orange, wave

- You can get 4 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 2 same orders.

(6) 5 points for each Caramel Macchiato (Including Ice Caramel Macchiato) order card: Blue green, two dotted lines

- You can get 5 points for one card, and the points will be doubled when there are more than 2 same orders.
