Chinese tourist spending much and boosts South Korean economy

Several Chinese visitors packed before Korean makeup brand counters at Lotte Duty Free Shop in Eulji-ro, Seoul, on Tuesday, the most recent day of their “Brilliant Week” of holidays that denote China’s National Day. Leaving little room to walk between the counters, female tourists enjoyed the last shopping spree of their vacation.The Chinese National Day occasion, which runs from Oct. 1-7, is a top time for shops in famous visitor spots, such as, Myeong-dong, Dongdaemun and Insa-dong.  A huge number of Chinese visit South Korea amid the weeklong holiday. The Korea Tourism Organization anticipated prior that 160,000 Chinese would visit amid Golden Week, up 35 percent from the same period a year ago.

“The number of Chinese customers has doubled amid the National Day occasion week,” said Kim Chul-in, a sales clerk at Sulwhasoo, a famous cosmetic brand with Chinese tourists, at the Lotte Duty Free Shop. “Eighty percent of our customers are Chinese. They have spent around 300,000 won ($280) to 400,000 won on average per individual.” An another sales staff of the same brand at the Lotte Department Store said she sees around six to seven vast gatherings of visitors going by the store every day, and a large portion of them use 1 million won on healthy skin and cosmetics items.
