To satisfy this, probiotics should have resistance to gastric acidity and bile acid. Resistance to gastric acidity After 30 minutes in the stomach, more than 70% of the bacteria are evacuated toward the intestine. To satisfy this worst condition, we treated probiotics with artificial gastic juice(pH 2.5) over 1 hours at 37°C. Each microorganism is highly resistant in acidic conditions(60% survival after 60 minutes). When ingested before breakfast or during meals(pH>4), probiotics should be able to pass through to the intestine without being damaged. However, most probiotic bacteria are susceptible to very low pH, consumption should be avoided between meals when the pH values are below 2. Resistance to bile Bile acid secreted from gall bladder also serves as a defense mechanism against foreign intestinal microorganisms. Ability of probiotics to survive in the presence of bile acid is one of the main factors enhancing the growth of probiotics in the small intestine. The test practiced at 0.25~1.0% oxgall for 60min at 37°C. Results showed apparently that bile acid exerts an inhibitory effect to microorganism. However, Mediogen's probiotics are able to survive in high concentration of bile acid and should reach the distal end of the small intestine without damage.
