Jangdojang (lit. "decorative knifemaker") is a term used to refer to a skilled artisan of small knives (jangdo, meaning "decorative knife") carried traditionally as a personal decoration or a weapon for self-protection. The decorative knife as a weapon is known to have started to be carried out in the Goryeo period. In the later Joseon period after the Imjin Wars (1592-98), carrying the knife became a widespread practice among the noble ladies who wanted to use it in case of emergency to keep their chastity or fidelity.
